Third Battle of Kharkov

19 Feb 1943 – 15 Mar 1943 · Kharkov and Belgorod

From 19 February to 15 March 1943 Erich von Manstein's Army Group South counter-attacked and retook Kharkov and Belgorod, which the Germans called the Donets Campaign. Soviet forces had retaken Kharkov on 16 February after the German defeat at Stalingrad, but their armoured spearheads had overextended and the Voronezh and Southwestern Fronts were stretched thin. German panzer forces, including the SS Panzer Corps, destroyed Soviet armour south of Kharkov; the SS Panzer Corps entered the city on 11 March and it was back in German hands on 14–15 March. The Belgorod–Kharkov line it created set the stage for the Kursk salient.
