Massacres of Poles in Volhynia

9 Feb 1943 – 29 Feb 1944 · Volhynia

From February 1943 units of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA) and local Ukrainian peasants carried out mass killings of the Polish population of Volhynia, then under German occupation. The violence peaked on 11 July 1943, when dozens of Polish villages were attacked simultaneously. An estimated 50,000–60,000 Poles were murdered in Volhynia; the killings spread to Eastern Galicia in 1944 and provoked Polish reprisals.
