Battle of Stalingrad

17 Jul 1942 – 2 Feb 1943 · Stalingrad (Volgograd)

The German 6th Army advanced to the Volga and fought for the city street by street from late August 1942. On 19 November the Soviet Operation Uranus broke through the Romanian-held flanks and encircled the 6th Army. Relief attempts failed, and the last German forces surrendered on 2 February 1943 — a turning point of the war in Europe.
