Operation Uranus

19 Nov 1942 – 23 Nov 1942 · Kalach on the Don, near Stalingrad

Operation Uranus, 19–23 November 1942, was the Soviet counter-offensive during the Battle of Stalingrad. The Stalingrad Front under Andrei Yeryomenko attacked from the south and forces under Nikolai Vatutin joined the offensive, while Aleksandr Vasilevsky coordinated the effort to relieve Stalingrad. The Third and Fourth Romanian Armies bore the brunt of the first attacks and were routed. Soviet forces from the north and south linked up at Kalach on 22 November, encircling the German Sixth Army and parts of the Fourth Panzer Army; Hitler chose to hold the pocket and supply it by air.
