Siege of Leningrad

8 Sept 1941 – 27 Jan 1944 · Leningrad (Saint Petersburg)

German and Finnish forces cut Leningrad off from the rest of the USSR for almost 900 days. Supplied only across Lake Ladoga — by boat and, in winter, the ice 'Road of Life' — the city suffered famine; estimates of civilian deaths are commonly around 800,000 or more.
