Siege of Odessa (1941)

From 8 August to 16 October 1941 the Romanian 4th Army, the main attacking force, with elements of the German 11th Army, besieged Odessa. It was defended by the Soviet Separate Coastal Army, formed on 9 July 1941, with support from the Black Sea Fleet. On the night of 14–15 October the fleet evacuated the garrison to Sevastopol. The siege ended as an Axis victory after 73 days and four assaults, though the defenders were successfully evacuated.
