Battle of Smolensk (1941)

10 Jul 1941 – 10 Sept 1941 · Smolensk

Army Group Centre's panzer groups encircled large Soviet forces around Smolensk in July 1941 and took the city on 16 July. Fierce Soviet counter-attacks around Yelnya and Smolensk continued into September and, together with supply problems, delayed the German drive on Moscow by about two months. The battle cost the Red Army roughly 750,000 casualties, including over 300,000 prisoners.
