Campaign
Operation Barbarossa
22 Jun 1941 – 5 Dec 1941 · Soviet western border (Brest Fortress)
Germany and its allies invaded the Soviet Union along a front from the Baltic to the Black Sea. Huge encirclements at Białystok–Minsk, Smolensk and Kyiv captured millions of Soviet soldiers, but the campaign failed to defeat the USSR before winter. Behind the front, mobile killing units began the mass murder of Jews.
