Battle of the Brest Fortress

22 Jun 1941 – 29 Jun 1941 · Brest Fortress

German forces struck Brest Fortress without warning on 22 June 1941, expecting to take it on the first day. The Austrian 45th Infantry Division, about 17,000 strong, faced a Soviet garrison of roughly 9,000 soldiers, border guards and NKVD personnel. The Germans needed about a week; the East Fort was the last major position to fall, after Luftwaffe bombing on 29 June. Later Soviet accounts of a 32-day defence are considered a myth, but in 1965 the fortress received the title of Hero Fortress and became a symbol of Soviet resistance.
