Battle of Kiev (1941)

23 Aug 1941 – 26 Sept 1941 · Kiev and the left bank of the Dnieper

Hitler diverted Guderian's panzer group south from the Moscow axis in late August 1941; it met Kleist's armour at Lokhvitsa on 16 September, closing a vast pocket east of Kiev. The city fell on 19 September and the encirclement was liquidated by 26 September. The Red Army lost some 600,000 men killed, missing or captured — the largest encirclement in military history.
