Battle of Lenino
12 Oct 1943 – 13 Oct 1943 · Lenino, Mogilev region
On 12–13 October 1943 the Polish 1st Tadeusz Kościuszko Infantry Division under Gen. Zygmunt Berling led the main assault near Lenino in the Mogilev region, supported by Soviet artillery, tanks and rifle divisions on its flanks. The attack was part of the larger Soviet Spas-Demensk offensive to clear the eastern bank of the Dnieper and break the Panther-Wotan line. The Poles broke into the German lines but could not hold the gains, and the division was withdrawn after two days. The battle was a tactical and strategic failure, though Soviet propaganda presented it as a success.
