Operation Tempest

2 Jan 1944 – 27 Jul 1944 · Eastern Poland (Vilnius, Lwów)

Operation Tempest began on 2 January 1944, when Red Army forces crossed the prewar Polish border. Its aim was to seize German-occupied cities and areas while Germany prepared its defences, and to let Polish civil authorities take power before the Soviets arrived. The Home Army (AK) carried out the uprisings and coordinated with the advancing Red Army. In Vilnius (Operation Ostra Brama) the AK attacked on 7 July and jointly occupied the city with Soviet forces on 13 July; on 14 July the Soviets disarmed and imprisoned AK officers. The Lwów uprising began on 23 July and took the city within four days, after which Polish leaders were seized by the NKVD. The end date is that of the last episode described here.
