Battle of Kursk
5 Jul 1943 – 23 Aug 1943 · Kursk salient
Germany's Operation Citadel attacked the Kursk salient from north and south against deep, prepared Soviet defences. The offensive was halted within about a week, and Soviet counteroffensives retook Oryol and Kharkiv. After Kursk, the strategic initiative on the Eastern Front passed permanently to the Red Army.
