Campaign

Battle of the Dnieper

26 Aug 1943 – 23 Dec 1943 · Dnieper river, Ukraine

Following Kursk, four Soviet fronts advanced on a 1,400 km front to the Dnieper, which Hitler had declared the backbone of the 'Panther–Wotan' line. Forcing the river from late September, the Red Army seized bridgeheads, liberated Kiev on 6 November 1943 and cut off the Crimea. One of the costliest operations of the war, it involved some four million soldiers.
