Lend-Lease Act

11 Mar 1941 – 20 Sept 1945 · Washington, D.C.

President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed the Lend-Lease Act on 11 March 1941. It let the United States supply food, oil and military materiel to Allied nations, justified as essential to American defence. Britain received about $31.4 billion, the Soviet Union about $11.3 billion and China about $1.6 billion; shipments totalled about $50.1 billion, roughly 17% of US war expenditure. Aid was extended to the Soviet Union in October 1941, and the programme ended on 20 September 1945.
