Casablanca Conference
14 Jan 1943 – 24 Jan 1943 · Casablanca, French Morocco
The Casablanca Conference (codename SYMBOL) took place from 14 to 24 January 1943 in French Morocco. Roosevelt and Churchill led the talks with their military staffs; Charles de Gaulle and Henri Giraud attended with minor roles, and Stalin declined, citing the Battle of Stalingrad. The Allies committed to demand 'unconditional surrender' from the Axis, agreed to invade Sicily and Italy before a main invasion of France, to intensify the strategic bombing of Germany and to advance on Japan through the Pacific. The conference also called for joint leadership of the Free French by de Gaulle and Giraud.
