Sobibór uprising

14 October 1943 · Sobibór

Sobibór was an extermination camp in German-occupied Poland, built as part of Operation Reinhard solely to murder Jews; it operated from May 1942 until the revolt of 14 October 1943, and the article gives an estimate of 170,000 to 250,000 people murdered there. On 14 October 1943 prisoners led by Alexander Pechersky and Leon Feldhendler killed eleven SS men. The plan was disrupted, but about 300 prisoners escaped over the fences and through a minefield; roughly 60 of them survived the war. The camp was closed after the revolt and most of it was demolished by the Nazis to hide their crimes.
