Air operation

Schweinfurt–Regensburg mission

17 August 1943 · Schweinfurt and Regensburg

On 17 August 1943 the US Eighth Air Force flew a daylight raid during Operation Pointblank, with one force attacking the Messerschmitt Bf 109 factory at Regensburg and a second the ball-bearing plants at Schweinfurt. Of 376 B-17s dispatched, 146 went to Regensburg and 230 to Schweinfurt, and 60 were lost, 24 from the Regensburg force and 36 from the Schweinfurt force. Regensburg was heavily damaged, but the losses were severe and the Schweinfurt force could not be followed up quickly; deep raids were curtailed for five months after the later Schweinfurt raid.
