Bombing of Hamburg (Operation Gomorrah)

24 Jul 1943 – 3 Aug 1943 · Hamburg

Over eight days and nights from 24 July 1943 RAF Bomber Command and the US 8th Air Force attacked Hamburg. On the night of 27–28 July a firestorm swept the eastern districts, with winds of hurricane force and temperatures of 800 °C. About 37,000 people were killed and a million residents fled the city; it was the most destructive air raid in Europe to that date.
