Operation Veritable (Battle of the Reichswald)
8 Feb 1945 – 11 Mar 1945 · Reichswald, between the Rhine and the Maas
Operation Veritable ran from 8 February to 11 March 1945 as the northern pincer of the Allied push towards the Rhine. It was carried out by Montgomery's 21st Army Group, mainly the First Canadian Army under Harry Crerar, with the British XXX Corps under Brian Horrocks, advancing through the Reichswald Forest between the Rhine and Maas. The southern pincer, Operation Grenade by the US Ninth Army, was delayed by German flooding of the Roer; the two forces linked up near Geldern on 4 March. The German withdrawal ended on 10 March and the operation concluded on 11 March.
