Battle of the Scheldt

2 Oct 1944 – 8 Nov 1944 · Scheldt estuary, Zeeland

Antwerp was captured intact on 4 September 1944, but its port could not be used while the Germans held the banks of the Scheldt estuary. The First Canadian Army, with British and Polish units, cleared the Breskens pocket, South Beveland and finally the island of Walcheren by 8 November 1944, at a cost of nearly 13,000 casualties. The first Allied convoy reached Antwerp on 28 November.
