Battle of Hürtgen Forest

19 Sept 1944 – 16 Dec 1944 · Hürtgen Forest, Germany

From 19 September to 16 December 1944 US forces fought in the Hürtgen Forest, about 140 km² east of the Belgian–German border, against German forces under Walter Model (US commanders: Omar Bradley and Courtney Hodges). The Allies failed to take the area or the Rur Dam, and the offensive ended when the German Ardennes offensive began on 16 December; the article's infobox lists a German victory. US casualties are given as 33,000 killed and wounded (upper estimates 55,000, including about 9,000 non-combat losses) and German about 28,000.
