Battle of Cherbourg

22 Jun 1944 – 29 Jun 1944 · Cherbourg, Normandy

On 22–27 June 1944 US forces under J. Lawton Collins and Matthew Ridgway fought for Cherbourg, the largest port accessible from the Normandy landings, which planners needed to bring reinforcements directly from the United States. Commander Karl-Wilhelm von Schlieben was captured on 26 June, the day the 79th Division took Fort du Roule; the harbour fortifications and arsenal surrendered on 29 June and some cut-off troops held out until 1 July. The Germans wrecked and mined the port so thoroughly that the first ships used the harbour only in late July. The article gives Allied casualties of about 22,000 and German of 7,000 killed and 30,000 captured.
