Operation Cobra

25 Jul 1944 – 31 Jul 1944 · Saint-Lô, Normandy

Operation Cobra, 25–31 July 1944, was launched by the US First Army under Lt-Gen. Omar Bradley. After weather delays it began on 25 July with a concentrated air bombardment of the area near Saint-Lô; some bombs fell on US troops, killing among others Lt-Gen. Lesley McNair. VII Corps under Maj-Gen. J. Lawton Collins led the main assault and by 27 July most organised German resistance had collapsed. VIII Corps seized Avranches around 30 July, and by 31 July the First Army had emerged from the bocage. The operation shifted the fighting from close infantry combat to rapid manoeuvre and helped lead to the Falaise pocket.
