Normandy landings and Operation Overlord

On 6 June 1944 more than 150,000 Allied troops landed on five beaches in Normandy, supported by airborne divisions and the largest invasion fleet in history. After weeks of fighting in the bocage, the breakout in late July and the closing of the Falaise Pocket on 21 August led to the collapse of German forces in north-western France.
