Campaign

Guadalcanal campaign

7 Aug 1942 – 9 Feb 1943 · Guadalcanal, Solomon Islands

On 7 August 1942 Allied forces, mostly US Marines, landed on Guadalcanal, Tulagi and Florida Island, meeting little initial resistance on Guadalcanal. They captured the airfield being built at Lunga Point and completed it as Henderson Field; Japan tried to retake it in mid-September and late October. The campaign included several naval battles, among them Savo Island, the Eastern Solomons, Cape Esperance, the Santa Cruz Islands and the Naval Battle of Guadalcanal. In December Japan decided to abandon the island and evacuated its last forces by 9 February 1943.
