Doolittle Raid

18 April 1942 · Tokyo, Yokohama and other Japanese cities

On 18 April 1942 sixteen B-25B Mitchell bombers led by Lt. Col. James H. Doolittle took off from USS Hornet and struck ten military and industrial targets in Tokyo and others in Yokohama, Yokosuka, Nagoya, Kobe and Osaka. The launch came about ten hours early and roughly 170 nautical miles farther out than planned after a Japanese picket boat spotted the task force. All 16 aircraft were lost (15 destroyed, one interned in the Soviet Union); 3 crewmen were killed and 8 captured, of whom 3 were executed. Japan then launched the Zhejiang–Jiangxi campaign against Chinese civilians; Chinese records cite over 20,000 civilians murdered.
