Battle of Midway

The Battle of Midway, fought on 4–7 June 1942 near Midway Atoll, ended in an American victory. Admiral Chester Nimitz commanded the US Pacific Fleet; Frank Jack Fletcher held overall command at sea from the carrier Yorktown and Raymond Spruance commanded Enterprise and Hornet. On the Japanese side Isoroku Yamamoto led the Combined Fleet and Chūichi Nagumo the carrier force. Japan lost four carriers — Akagi, Kaga, Sōryū and Hiryū; the United States lost Yorktown.
