Battle of Leyte Gulf

23 Oct 1944 – 26 Oct 1944 · Leyte Gulf, Philippines

On 23–26 October 1944 the US Third and Seventh Fleets, with about 300 ships, fought roughly 70 ships of the Japanese Combined Fleet in four main engagements: Sibuyan Sea, Surigao Strait, Cape Engaño and Samar. The US lost 11 warships, including the light carrier Princeton; Japan lost 26, including four carriers and three battleships. It was the largest naval battle of the war, saw the first organised kamikaze attacks and was the last battleship-versus-battleship battle. The Japanese navy never again sailed in comparable force.
