Battle of Iwo Jima

19 Feb 1945 – 26 Mar 1945 · Iwo Jima

The battle ran from 19 February to 26 March 1945. Admiral Raymond Spruance led the overall invasion and Lt-Gen. Holland Smith the expeditionary troops; Lt-Gen. Tadamichi Kuribayashi commanded the Japanese defence. On 23 February Marines raised a flag on Mount Suribachi, and Joe Rosenthal's photograph of the second flag-raising became one of the war's best-known images. The island was declared secure on 26 March. The US wanted its airfields for fighter escorts and emergency landings by B-29 bombers, and its lessons shaped the Battle of Okinawa.
