Battle of Saipan

The Battle of Saipan was fought from 15 June to 9 July 1944. The US V Amphibious Corps, including the 2nd and 4th Marine Divisions and the Army's 27th Infantry Division, landed under Lt-Gen. Holland Smith, against the Japanese 43rd Division under Lt-Gen. Yoshitsugu Saitō. The invasion triggered the Battle of the Philippine Sea, which effectively destroyed Japanese carrier airpower. Capturing Saipan put major Japanese cities within range of B-29 bombers; after organised resistance ended, about 1,000 civilians died by suicide.
