From 8 March to 3 July 1944 the Japanese Fifteenth Army under Lt-Gen. Renya Mutaguchi launched Operation U-Go to destroy Allied forces at Imphal in Manipur and invade India. Lt-Gen. William Slim led the British Fourteenth Army and Lt-Gen. Geoffry Scoones's IV Corps held Imphal. The simultaneous Battle of Kohima took place on the road used to relieve the encircled forces. IV Corps and XXXIII Corps linked up on 22 June, ending the siege. The Allies won, the Japanese retreated into Burma, and many died of starvation, disease and exhaustion.
