Anglo-Soviet invasion of Iran

25 Aug 1941 – 31 Aug 1941 · Iran

On 25 August 1941 Britain and the Soviet Union invaded Iran, which had declared neutrality; fighting ended on 31 August, when Iran formally agreed to surrender. The Allies wanted to secure supply routes to the USSR through Iran, protect the Iranian oil fields, limit German influence and prevent an Axis advance toward the Baku oil fields or British India. On 16 September Reza Shah abdicated and went into exile, succeeded by his son Mohammad Reza Pahlavi, and Soviet forces entered Tehran on 17 September. Iran stayed under British and Soviet occupation until 1946.
