Campaign
Syria–Lebanon campaign
8 Jun 1941 – 14 Jul 1941 · Syria and Lebanon
On 8 June 1941 British Commonwealth and Free French forces began Operation Exporter, invading Vichy French-held Syria and Lebanon. The Allies wanted to stop Axis aircraft from using Syrian airfields to attack Egypt, after Vichy France had let German and Italian planes refuel there during the Anglo-Iraqi War. As Australian forces neared Beirut, the Vichy commander Henri Dentz sought an armistice and a ceasefire took effect at 00:01 on 12 July. The Armistice of Saint Jean d'Acre was signed on 14 July 1941, and Syria and Lebanon came under Free French control.
