Warsaw Uprising

1 Aug 1944 – 2 Oct 1944 · Warsaw

The Home Army (Armia Krajowa) rose against the German occupiers as Soviet forces approached the Vistula. The insurgents fought for 63 days with limited Allied air supply and without significant Soviet support. German forces killed tens of thousands of civilians, notably in the Wola massacre; after the capitulation the city was systematically destroyed.
