Campaign

Vistula–Oder offensive

12 Jan 1945 – 2 Feb 1945 · Central Poland, Vistula to Oder

Konev's 1st Ukrainian Front attacked from the Sandomierz bridgehead on 12 January 1945, followed by Zhukov's 1st Belorussian Front two days later. Warsaw was taken on 17 January, Łódź on 19 January and Kraków the same day; by early February Soviet troops stood on the Oder, 70 km from Berlin. The offensive shattered the German front and triggered the mass flight of civilians from the eastern provinces.
