Britain and France declare war on Germany
3 September 1939 · London and Paris
After Germany ignored their ultimatums to withdraw from Poland, the United Kingdom and France declared war on 3 September 1939. Apart from a limited French offensive in the Saar, no major land operations followed in the West until May 1940 — the period known as the 'Phoney War'.
