Molotov–Ribbentrop Pact
23 August 1939 · Moscow
Germany and the Soviet Union signed a non-aggression treaty in Moscow. A secret protocol divided Eastern Europe — Poland, the Baltic states, Finland and Bessarabia — into German and Soviet spheres of influence, removing the risk of a two-front war for Germany before its attack on Poland.
