Operation Pedestal

10 Aug 1942 – 15 Aug 1942 · Central Mediterranean, to Malta

Operation Pedestal was the August 1942 convoy to relieve Malta; it entered the Mediterranean on the night of 9–10 August. The carrier HMS Eagle was torpedoed by U-73 on 11 August and sank within minutes, and the cruiser HMS Manchester was torpedoed by Italian motor torpedo boats on 12 August and scuttled; HMS Cairo was also lost. The damaged tanker SS Ohio, with the crucial fuel cargo, was towed into Grand Harbour on 15 August. Only five of the fourteen merchant ships reached Malta, but the fuel and cargo let the island hold on, and the operation is often called a costly strategic victory.
