Battle of Gazala
26 May 1942 – 21 Jun 1942 · Gazala line, west of Tobruk
Rommel's Panzerarmee Afrika outflanked the British Gazala line from the south on 26 May 1942. After a critical fight in the 'Cauldron' and the stubborn Free French defence of Bir Hakeim, the 8th Army was defeated and withdrew into Egypt. Tobruk fell on 21 June with some 33,000 prisoners, and Rommel was promoted to field marshal.
