Second Battle of El Alamein

The British Eighth Army under Montgomery defeated German and Italian forces under Rommel, ending the Axis threat to Egypt and the Suez Canal. Together with the Allied landings in French North Africa (Operation Torch, 8 November 1942), it opened the way to the Axis defeat in Africa in May 1943 and to the invasion of Italy.
