Campaign
East Prussian offensive
13 Jan 1945 – 25 Apr 1945 · East Prussia
The 3rd and 2nd Belorussian Fronts attacked East Prussia on 13–14 January 1945. By the end of January the province was cut off from the Reich and German forces were split into pockets around Heiligenbeil, Königsberg and the Samland peninsula. The fighting lasted until 25 April, when Pillau fell; hundreds of thousands of civilians fled across the frozen Vistula Lagoon or by sea.
