Deportation of Hungarian Jews

15 May 1944 – 9 Jul 1944 · Hungary (Budapest, provincial ghettos)

Germany occupied Hungary on 19 March 1944, and SS officer Adolf Eichmann arrived in Budapest to supervise the deportation of Hungary's Jews. Between 15 May and 9 July 1944 over 434,000 Jews were deported on 147 trains, mostly to Auschwitz, where about 80 percent were gassed on arrival. Regent Miklós Horthy ordered the deportations stopped under Allied and diplomatic pressure; the sources give 6 or 7 July as the date of the order. The Jews of Budapest were not deported in the same mass action: the big Budapest ghetto was walled off on 29 November 1944 and liberated by Soviet troops on 18 January 1945.
