Occupation

German occupation of Hungary (Operation Margarethe)

19 March 1944 · Budapest, Hungary

Fearing that Hungary would seek a separate peace, Germany occupied its ally. A pro-German government was installed, and between May and July 1944 about 437,000 Hungarian Jews were deported, most of them to Auschwitz-Birkenau, where the majority were murdered on arrival.
