Campaign

Jassy–Kishinev offensive

20 Aug 1944 – 29 Aug 1944 · Moldavia and Bessarabia

The 2nd and 3rd Ukrainian Fronts attacked on 20 August 1944 and within four days encircled the German 6th Army and much of the Romanian forces between the Prut and the Dniester. The catastrophe triggered King Michael's coup on 23 August and Romania's change of sides. By 29 August the Red Army stood at the gates of Bucharest and the oil centre of Ploiești.
