Battles of Tomaszów Lubelski

17 Sept 1939 – 26 Sept 1939 · Tomaszów Lubelski

In the battles of 17–26 September 1939 near Tomaszów Lubelski, Polish Army Kraków (Gen. Antoni Szylling) and Army Lublin (Gen. Tadeusz Piskor) tried to break through German lines towards the Romanian Bridgehead. The first phase (18–20 September) ended with the surrender of Army Kraków on 20 September. In the second phase (from about 21 September) the Northern Front under Gen. Stefan Dąb-Biernacki, including Gen. Władysław Anders's cavalry, moved to help. The German VIII Corps and XXII Panzer Corps won, and most remaining Polish forces capitulated around 26 September.
