Battle of Wizna

7 Sept 1939 – 10 Sept 1939 · Wizna on the Narew

From 7 to 10 September 1939 a small Polish force under Captain Władysław Raginis held a fortified line at Wizna on the Narew River against a much larger German force that included Heinz Guderian's XIX Panzer Corps, the 10th Panzer Division and the Lötzen Infantry Brigade. The Germans won, but the defence delayed their advance for three days. Raginis refused to surrender and died after ordering his remaining men to lay down their arms.
