Battle of Westerplatte
1 Sept 1939 – 7 Sept 1939 · Westerplatte, Danzig
The Polish Military Transit Depot on the Westerplatte peninsula was attacked at dawn on 1 September 1939 by the battleship Schleswig-Holstein and German assault troops. Its garrison of about 200 men under Major Henryk Sucharski and Captain Franciszek Dąbrowski held out for seven days against artillery, air attack and repeated assaults before surrendering on 7 September. The defence became a symbol of Polish resistance in September 1939.
