Battle of Okinawa

1 Apr 1945 – 22 Jun 1945 · Okinawa

US forces landed on Okinawa on 1 April 1945 and the battle ended on 22 June 1945, after about 82 days. Lt-Gen. Simon Bolivar Buckner Jr. led the US Tenth Army, Admiral Raymond Spruance the Fifth Fleet, and Lt-Gen. Mitsuru Ushijima the Japanese 32nd Army, whose defence combined regular troops, naval infantry and conscripted Okinawans. British, Australian, New Zealand and Canadian naval units also took part. The initial landing was the largest amphibious assault of the Pacific War, and the battleship Yamato was sunk in April during Operation Ten-Go. The Allies won and Okinawa became a fleet anchorage and airbase close to Japan.
