Soviet invasion of Manchuria

9 Aug 1945 – 2 Sept 1945 · Manchuria

The Soviet Union declared war on Japan on 8 August 1945 and its ground invasion began shortly after midnight on 9 August. Marshal Aleksandr Vasilevsky led the Far East Command, directing three fronts, against the Japanese Kwantung Army under Gen. Otozo Yamada, which defended Manchuria and Korea. Fighting continued until the Japanese surrender document was signed on 2 September 1945. The Soviets won and Manchukuo, Japan's puppet state in Manchuria, collapsed.
